RE: [Philmont]: Camera Suggestions

IMO digital is the way to go at Philmont. Most digitals are very light
weight. A memory card or two are not much bigger than a postage stamp and
have the capacity of dozens of rolls of film, not even counting bad shots
that can be deleted. You don't need to deal with many rolls of film or open
the camera to change rolls.

The May 2004 issue of Consumer Reports (just out) has a review of 60+
digital cameras. There are many that weigh under 8oz and some as light as
4-5oz - including batteries. Interestingly, the one Calvin claimed was
light is actually one of the heavier ones; but it's all relative. Compared
to SLRs, most digitals are like feathers. I lugged a big SLR on a 75-mile
trip 25 years ago- that was the last time.

I second the idea about having your camera accessible and ready to use. If
you have to stop and dig it out of your pack every time you want to take a
picture, you wont take many or you will have a very irritated crew. I
clipped the camera's wrist strap to a D-ring on my packs shoulder strap. I
made a holster out of a soft drink can insulator and Velcroed it to my wait
belt. I could pull the camera out and shoot while it was still clipped to
my pack.
