If you are wanting some good alternatives to the dehydrated
Philmont meals to practice with I would recommend checking out
your local grocery store for any type of box meals. Such as
Macaroni & Cheese, boxed pasta mixes, etc. You could also try
the boxed rice meals and add some canned meat such as canned
chicken to the meal.
Of course, to me the best way to practice is to practice on what
your crew will be cooking this summer. Practice makes perfect and
it also allows you to decide what type of spices you want to bring
and if you want to bring any extras. In my case I plan to bring soup
packets ( I cannot believe that Philmont has removed soup from
almost all the dinners- I wonder if they have seen an increase in the
number of dehydration cases since this menu change). The soup
will place more fluid into your crew's system and help them to stay
better hydrated. There is nothing like a bowl of hot soup before
dinner after an afternoon rainstorm that brings the temperature
down.
