I also agree this a very controlled situation up to a point. If you were on the AT you would be totally dependant on your self & crew. I feel a knife is something that should be part of every ones personal equipment. If you carry a mini buck that weighs .7 of a ounce, you should be able to find something else not to bring. Once a knife was part of the official list of things to carry.

  Also, keep in mind it's not like Philmont is real "backcountry" camping. You are never more than a few miles from help, so you don't need to make medical appliances with your knife. You are given EXACTLY what you need to eat, pre-packaged, so you don't have to think about meal planning and preparation. You cannot make a fire, so tinder is a non-issue. Fishing is allowed only under very controlled conditions. Camp tools: very restricted. Off-trail scrambling: forbidden. The best tool I had on my knife in '02 was the toothpick.
