Re: [Philmont]: Trek #3 sources for topos for each trek??

However, I am nearly positive that these computerized programs will not
have Philmont trails or old mining roads, camps, etc., listed on them -
at least not the ones I've reviewed (if I'm wrong on this, please
correct!) So they are not a good substitute for the sectional maps
(which, in general, are amazingly good). Look at them (computerized
topo maps) as a supplement or training aid only - not a replacement.

BTW, the USGS topos are similarly deficient in that only major trails
and camps are listed, and furthermore the many recent changes in the
Philmont trail system are not reflected. Again, another supplement, not
a replacement.

As a more general comment, however, it is always good for Scouts to be
aware of what is available out there in the way of land navigation aids,
both paper and electronic. But it is also good for them to understand
their relative benefits and limitations, too....
