Hi Bob,
This is something that you should address with your crew. We had a similar
water issue in 2002 and ended up shifting our meals so that the meal that
used the most water (dinner - prep and cleanup) was eaten where we had a
water source. From there we shifted breakfast for lunch and lunch for our
TOT/last night dinner. Each of us carried our daily water, plus one extra
quart to the TOT camp and we carried an additional supply (18 quarts for 10
trekkers) which we distributed the final morning. Our crew had more than
enough water to take us back to base camp. Our sister crew, took a slightly
different approach and didn't take enough of an extra supply and ended up a
little short. Although the temptation was there to look the other way and
say too bad, we took the high road and shared our excess. (you would think
that by the end of the trek, they'd be able to figure out the water
consumption thing, but I think they were too focused on thinking lighter
weights)
Here in New England Trekking poles are almost a requirement with all the
roots, rocks, streams running down the middle of the trails, etc. At
Philmont they will come in handy and can also be used with your dinning fly.
Properly used, your trekking poles will take 5-20% of the weight off of
your hips and knees. As I prepare for my 2nd Philmont adventure as an
adult, when I use the poles, I notice that my arms, chest and shoulders are
a little more fatigued when I come off of the trail. This is better than
feeling the extra stress in my knees.
regards,
Tom Fitzpatrick

We will spend 2 days at Cimarroncito for a lay over. From there, we will
travel to Tooth Ridge camp for our final evening on the trail. Someone said
water is not very available on that segment. Can anyone confirm, and what
would you suggest in the way quantity. Obviously, no one wants to carry a 1
or 2 gallon water jug on a 10 miler if not absolutely necessary. On the
other hand, we need to make sure we have enough water for our day off the
ridge and into base camp.
Additionally, any thoughts of using treeking poles? Are there many hikers
with poles or hiking staffs? I'm in good shape, but at 44, my knees are a
bit more sensitive to constant stress. Thanks for any input.
