We had the same issue two years ago (water was especially scarce then.)
After leaving Cimarroncito, you'll be advised to have dinner for lunch at
Clark's Fork (saving lunch for dinner that night) and then camel up for the
hike to the Tooth and in to base the following day. Most of our crew
carried the equivalent of 4 quarts of water each day(I think I carried two
nalgene's and a 100 oz. camelback), and we just made sure we were full
leaving Clark's Fork. There were crews that carried a 4-5 gallon bladder in
addition to personal water that day, but we didn't think it was necessary.
We didn't have any problems making it on that ration.
The problem we had was that we left Cimarroncito and arrived at Clark's Fork
about 9:30 a.m. We had to kill a couple of hours before eating our dinner
for lunch, and then we were lethargic for the long hike to the Tooth. We
were not able to do it, but if you can find any way to get two lunches, so
you could eat one on the trail, I think you would have a better time of it.
Best regards

Subject: [Philmont]: Camel up?
We will spend 2 days at Cimarroncito for a lay over. From there, we will
travel to Tooth Ridge camp for our final evening on the trail. Someone said
water is not very available on that segment. Can anyone confirm, and what
would you suggest in the way quantity. Obviously, no one wants to carry a 1
or 2 gallon water jug on a 10 miler if not absolutely necessary. On the
other hand, we need to make sure we have enough water for our day off the
ridge and into base camp.
Additionally, any thoughts of using treeking poles? Are there many hikers
with poles or hiking staffs? I'm in good shape, but at 44, my knees are a
bit more sensitive to constant stress. Thanks for any input.
