Your last reliable water source will be Clark's Fork. The spring at
Shaffer's Pass is dry at times and runs very slow at best. I suggest eating
your dinner for lunch at Clark's Fork or getting the commissary to
substitute a lunch for a dinner so you will have two lunches that day. In
2001 we had our dinner at Clark's Fork and started towards Tooth Ridge Camp
around 1:00. We each carried 4-5 quarts from Clark's Fork. The afternoon
hike Tooth Ridge Camp was hot and dry. We started early the next morning
getting to CHQ around 8:00. The amount of water we had was just enough to
get us there. I have talked to several crews that ran out of water on Tooth
Ridge before making CHQ.

We don't carry large water containers. We each carry 3 quart Nalgene
bottles (or equivalent in a hydration system) and a 2-3 quart collapsible
water container (like the Nalgene Canteen) for when we are going into a dry
camp. That way water is carried evenly by the crew.

Hiking poles - don't leave home without them.

Subject: [Philmont]: Camel up?

We will spend 2 days at Cimarroncito for a lay over. From there, we will
travel to Tooth Ridge camp for our final evening on the trail. Someone said
water is not very available on that segment. Can anyone confirm, and what
would you suggest in the way quantity. Obviously, no one wants to carry a 1
or 2 gallon water jug on a 10 miler if not absolutely necessary. On the
other hand, we need to make sure we have enough water for our day off the
ridge and into base camp.
Additionally, any thoughts of using treeking poles? Are there many hikers
with poles or hiking staffs? I'm in good shape, but at 44, my knees are a
bit more sensitive to constant stress. Thanks for any input.
