RE: [Philmont]: Camel up?

My 46 year old knees are still thanking me for taking a pair of poles
last year, and there were plenty of younger folks using them as well.
They were especially used on the Tooth Ridge trail; a lot of rocks, a
lot of stepping onto and off of rocks, and a lot of fatigue. I probably
would have wound up on my rear end, or worse, a half dozen times without
the poles.

As for water, there isn't any on the Tooth Ridge, and you should plan on
a couple of days of hot, dry hiking. We shifted weight by giving a
couple of guys the 2.5 gallon collapsible jugs, and giving most of their
personal water bottles to other crew members. As bottles were emptied
and refilled from the crew jugs, the "camels" took their personal
bottles back. That way, every one was carrying essentially the same
weight in water.

Subject: [Philmont]: Camel up?

We will spend 2 days at Cimarroncito for a lay over. From there, we
will travel to Tooth Ridge camp for our final evening on the trail.
Someone said water is not very available on that segment. Can anyone
confirm, and what would you suggest in the way quantity. Obviously, no
one wants to carry a 1 or 2 gallon water jug on a 10 miler if not
absolutely necessary. On the other hand, we need to make sure we have
enough water for our day off the ridge and into base camp.
Additionally, any thoughts of using treeking poles? Are there many
hikers with poles or hiking staffs? I'm in good shape, but at 44, my
knees are a bit more sensitive to constant stress. Thanks for any
input.
