We did trek 5 last summer, yes Tooth Ridge is dry. You can fill up all your water bottles at Clark's Fork. After our last food pick-up we ate a dinner for lunch and saved the lunch for our last dinner on the trail to conserve water. We all carried 3 - 1.5 qt. bottles and filled them at Clark's Fork along with a 1.5 gallon water bladder. Each member took his turn carrying the water bladder as we climbed Shaeffer's Pass. The crew leader kept a time on us as we all carried the bladder for 5 minutes passing it up the line to the person in front of us. As we stopped for water breaks we drank from our canteens then re-filled them from the bladder. What a relief to finally unload the water from that bladder. The spring at the pass was dry in 2003, however we did use it in 2001 to top off our canteens. You will find out at Logistics if its running but I wouldn't count on it with the drought. Tooth Ridge trail last summer was very dusty and dry and as we finally made it into Tooth Ridge
camp, everything was covered in a fine dust including us. Talk about dirty and gritty, just knowing a shower was a day away was a big thrill. As a rule we always Camel up before we leave a camp in the morning, however due to the fact there is no water until basecamp, we usually don't camel up our last day on the trail. Make sure and get an early start as the trail into basecamp is mostly in the sun and its a good idea to beat the heat. We all made it into basecamp with about a 1/2 canteen of water left which cuts it pretty close but better to have 1/2 a canteen then no water at all.
Happy Hiking

We will spend 2 days at Cimarroncito for a lay over. From there, we will travel to Tooth Ridge camp for our final evening on the trail. Someone said water is not very available on that segment. Can anyone confirm, and what would you suggest in the way quantity. Obviously, no one wants to carry a 1 or 2 gallon water jug on a 10 miler if not absolutely necessary. On the other hand, we need to make sure we have enough water for our day off the ridge and into base camp.
Additionally, any thoughts of using treeking poles? Are there many hikers with poles or hiking staffs? I'm in good shape, but at 44, my knees are a bit more sensitive to constant stress. Thanks for any input.
