Don't know enough to talk about the water but I can talk about the poles. I
would definitely reccomend them. I am 49 with knees that I am concerned about.
Bought treking poles a while back but just used them around the neighborhood
and on flat hikes. On the flat hikes I saw enough to be convinced that they
would be an asset at Philmont. This past weekend we did the AT which was my
first "real" chance to use them. I'm sold. Wouldn't even consider trying
backpacking w/o them.
