The train ride from Los Angeles is only 23 hours. Maybe you just transposed
the numbers? :-)
Last year our crew of 11 took duffel bags that were about 24x12 with their
base camp/travel gear.
They had plenty of room in the two lockers.
You need to bring your own locks.
What to pack? Field uniform, of course, spare clothes to walk around in.
Towel and hygiene for that oh so wonderful shower when you come off trail.
Comfy non-trail shoes. snacks for the train, food is expensive. You'll have
a fairly long stop in Albuquerque where you can get off the train and the
boys will buy stuff. Get Coop's Philmont Advisors guide, it gives info like
this and so much more.
Our boys (and one of the advisors) were highly dubious about the train. Now
they say they wouldn't have taken any other option.
Watch carefully for deals from Amtrak. You may have taken advantage of
their two-for-one special two months ago? They had the same last year.
Saved us a ton.
If you don't have tickets, and you are geographically not too far, getting
on the train in Fullerton can be a lot better than LA. Traffic is far
better, parking is considerably cheaper and more convenient. And it is an
hour closer to Philmont :-)
Have fun

We just decided to take the train this time, so I was wondering how to
pack for the 32-hour ride from L.A.; what fits in the storage bin at H.Q.?
I was guessing a gym-size duffle or a flight carry-on, for each of our
eleven crewmembers/advisors.
