1. Is the campfire at Uracca a reasonable possibility (and worth it) while
camping at Toothache on Day 3?
I wouldn't do it. In the daylight, Urraca camp is a good 60- to 90-minute
walk from Toothache Springs as you have to up the mesa and down the other
side. The hike up the south side of the mesa is pretty rough, with a lot of
scrub oak along the trail. Not something I'd want to do in the dark. The
campfire at Urraca is generally fair at best - like any of the campfires,
it's hit or miss year-to-year depending on the staff.
2. The route from Lower Bonita to Apache Springs on Day 6 shown on the map
(page 54) appears to show a rather circuitous route north and west. What
it the usual recommended trail between these two camps?
It looks like the map in the TREKS book has you going through Phillips
Junction for some reason. However, the itinerary indicates your food
pick-up is at Apache Springs (which has just been implemented in the last
couple of years). Perhaps the map hasn't been updated, who knows...
Anyhow, I would go through Fish Camp via Webster Pass - that's a really
scenic route and a lot shorter as well.
3. What is the recommended trail route from Red Hills to Clarks Fork on
Day 11?
Wow...that's a long day. My advice: Go on the ridge trail around Comanche
Peak to Thunder Ridge, then head east through Cypher's and then down along
the newly-reopened North Fork trail to the Hunting Lodge. That's the
shortest route, and it allows for program at Cypher's.
I haven't done this trek either, so somebody else may be able to give you
some more specific information. Good luck!
