The showering method works well, except when it rains/hails every day on
your trek...... We lived with damp clothes/socks the entire 10 days last
year. Most were reluctant to wash their clothes AT ALL, figuring they
would never dry out. We had the opportunity to shower more days than not
on our itinerary, but it was usually wet and cold by dinner time, so most
passed on the shower. I rinsed my socks nightly and then wore them damp
to bed most nights so that they would be dry by morning.

I'm not sure about the ziploc method, but in 2002, a PhilStaff member at
base camp suggested taking the bottom 1/2 of a car antifreeze container to
wash our clothes in. He even loaned us his to use for our trek. It
weighed nothing and we just tucked it over the end of someone's sleeping
back on an external frame pack for transport . In 2004, we brough an el
cheapo rubbermaid bowl for the same purpose. Per my comments in paragraph
#1, it didn't get much use in 2004.

The important thing about washing clothes at trail camps is that you MUST
haul the dirty water away from the water source for dumping (usually in the
sump). The plastic container makes this easier. Nothing like crew members
rinsing out their clothes directly in the stream--and you thought Polar
Pure makes your water taste bad <g>???? YIS. Mike.

What we do is to ask the kids and adults to shower with their clothes on,
start at the head and work down. This will wash the clothes they have on
and themselves. After they use their pack towel, they will be dry in less
than 20 minutes. Then they can wash their clothes in the sink. Then we
ask
them to only hang up their clothes on the tents or on the tent lines to
dry.
Philmont does not want anything hung up on the trees or bushes. Steve, 02,
03, 05.
