Poles aren't for everyone, but they work great for me.

They give a little boost when going uphill.
They help save the knees going downhill.
They help with balance crossing streams (on those slippery rocks.)
They hold up the tarp at night.
They hold up a pack line.
They help steady your camera, some even come with a camera mount.
And they do a respectable job of fending off mini-bears that may approach
during the advisor nap &-]

The only time I don't use them is on flat ground, which didn't happen very
much on our 2002 Trek.
