Rain gear a must! Don't skimp! Full set, jacket and pants, hood preferable,
hat for sure! We've been there, done that. Last year, in 2004, JUly, it
rained everyday but our last day. Though it (and we) were wet, our spirits were
only dampened when 1 of our crew had a sub-standard rain suit. He got wet,
it was cold, he suffered hypothermia to the point we had to strip him and put
him in his sleeeping bag for a couple hours. Ponchos may seem like a good idea
to some, however unless you have experienced a poncho backpacking in the rain
and are ok with it, Philmont is not the place to experiment. Frogg Toggs are
what 7 of our crew used because they were light,( under12 ozs. for both
pieces) impervious to the rain, breathable,( though they don't breath enough to
avoid the typical condensation while active hiking). Some say they rip easily.
If you are charging through thick brush, then yes they stand a good chance of
ripping. The trails at Philmont are not filled with thick over brush. If we
encountered any over hang, we just recognized it as a hazard to our equipment,
and proceeded with caution. At about $70.00 through Cabela's, and the fact
they were light, it was well worth the investment. I still have mine, and use
it for all my campouts. 1 note of caution; stay away from the hot flying
ashes from the campfires, they tend to melt pinholes in the material.
