Our Crews didn't plan on using the Polar Pure at Philmont. We started our
hike with four Sweetwater guardian water filters and sufficient replacement
filters to replace each one daily if needed. We believed we had a
disciplined crew and all of our training hikes went without a hitch. So we
never practiced using the polar pure. At the end of day one, yes day one! we
found ourselves with two broken filters when the internal plunging mechanism
simply cracked and broke off inside the housing. Of course I say that tongue
in cheek because quality gear treated properly, and taken care of, will last
for quite a long while. This was not the case for us, and since it hadn't
come up in our training, we didn't foresee this occurrence. Being
conservative, we were bringing four pumps just to "be on the safe side".
Unfortunately the phrase "boys will be boys" more accurately sums up the
event. Although the water at Pueblano was running very fast, it was full of
particulates which quickly darkened the filters and we had a single pump
that began to clog and squirt small amounts of water through the pressure
relief/bypass valve. This squirting water got the adjacent boy wet, so of
course, he had to try to get his pump to squirt as well "to retaliate".
Pumping faster and faster does in fact yield the desired effect. As the
internal pressure builds it does in fact squirt water out of the
relief/bypass valve. This of course is a design feature that is intended to
prevent permanent damage to the internal mechanism. But the pumps are not
designed to be used in this way and after about 15 minutes of this abuse,
two pumps broke.
The result was a lesson for all as pumping then took three to four times
longer everyday. By day three, most were using polar pure in their personal
water bottles. Those that didn't particularly like the taste found that
adding a bit of the lemonade drink mix worked best and made the water easier
to drink. The boys also learned a valuable lesson in responsibility and
accountability.

our filters clogged at Cyphers and they weren't field maintainable (another
decision by the crew, not the adults) so we turned to Polar Pure. We didn't
have the Vit C. The water tasted just fine. My understanding is that Polar
Pure is not being used this season however.

For those of you who still plan to use PolarPure on their check hikes, 1/2
tablet of el cheapo Vitamin C (added after waiting the necessary
purification time) eliminates the iodine taste. The boys thought it added a
slight lemon taste. We used the Vitamin C extensively in 2002, but in 2004,
a different crew just sucked down the straight iodine-tainted water.
Different folks means different strokes..... Also, for those prone to
muscle cramping, I have read at least one article that said Vitamin C can
reduce cramping, so this would be a probable benefit from the "Vitamin C
enhanced water". But, there are several doctors on the list and they would
know far better than I <g>! YIS. Mike ('76, '02 and '04).

Please respond to
philmont
These have probably been addressed before but:
polor pure-can you use the tablets that get rid of the taste? Should you
bring the 2 tablet iodine system?
Do crews always pair up 2 men to a tent? DO some adults pair up with their
sons? Do adults usually tent by themselves? What is recommended?
Explain Philmont's idea of One Pot cooking method where the freezed dried
food is involved? Do you boil the water and mix individually or mixed it all
in one pot?
