RE: [Philmont]: RE: Vitamin C & Polar Pure

Correct. The Vitamin C reacts with the iodine and converts it from iodine
to iodide. If the bugs are still alive, they won't be killed off after
that. You may want to rinse that bottle well so any remaining vit C is not
left in the bottle when it comes time to purify again.

This from the "Ask a Scientist" archive on the Newton BBS
http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00880.htm:

"The iodine is reduced to iodide, and the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is
oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid. Iodide is an essential mineral, and
dehydroascorbic acid is just as effective as a vitamin as the ascorbic acid
form."

It's my understanding that you shouldn't add the vitamin C (or anything
eklse, for that matter) until after the Polar Pure has done it's job killing
the bugs. I don't know the exact chemistry, but apparently the vitamin C
will "lock up" the iodine in the Polar Pure and render it pretty much
useless.
