[Philmont]: Carson Meadows

I'm apparently either losing my mind or have forgotten how to post. I've tried to send this twice and haven't seen it, so here's one more. Many apologies if it shows up more than once:

My troop's Philmont expedition 608G for this summer got Itinerary 11 (our first choice), but I didn't know and couldn't find Carson Meadows on the maps I had. Being the curious sort, I contacted a Phil-staffer who should be in the know. I can't reveal who he is, because he asked me not to quote him (and he advised, as always, contacting for the official information), but here's his description of the camp, location and program.

If I got the info right, this puts the camp at approximately UTM 4024958.33 N, 0498087.50E, Zone 13.

Hope this helps anyone else wondering about Carson Meadows.

"Carson Meadows opened as a trail camp this past summer . . . there will (probably) be 5 or 6 campsites. The camp is located about 1 mile due south of Rimrock Park camp, in a series of small parks and meadows. The topography of the area is varied with steep slopes, large rock formations, and small secluded meadows. The camp is named in honor of Kit Carson, who presumably passed through the area numerous times on his way up and down the Rayado and Agua Fria canyons headed towards the Moreno and Taos valleys.

"Carson Meadows will feature a mountain search and rescue program utilizing a combination of traditional and cutting edge SAR technologies. It will probably be at least initially similar to the SAR program offered in the past at Seally Canyon Camp. The program will be based around hands on activities and field exercise that will help teach the concepts and execution of mountain search and rescue.

"The new cabin was getting the finishing touches put on last fall, and is located at an approximate elevation of 7,750 ft. From the front porch you have a great view of the Tooth of Time through Stonewall pass.

"I believe the newer wall map (showing the entire ranch) from last year had Carson meadows shown.

"To give you an idea: 1). Go to Philmont.com  2). Look at the section entitled “maps and camps”  3). Choose the lower middle map section entitled “Crater”   4). Look for Rimrock Park Camp   5). Look at the square directly below the square that contains Rimrock. The camp is located about a 1/3 down from the top of this sq, and a 1/3 over from the left side of the sq. This is the approximate location of the camp.

"If you look carefully on the map you can see a trail leaving Old Abreu heading south/south-west. This trail used to lead up to Line Camp (now abandoned) but passes through the new Carson Meadows camp. You should also know that if you are hiking from Carson to Fish Camp you do not have to take the trail back down to Old Abreu and then climb back up to the notch. From Carson Meadows there is a new trail, not shown on the map that cuts directly west from the camp, and connects with the trail from Old Abreu to Fish Camp. This saves you a good deal of elevation."
