RE: [Philmont]: chafing issues?

Prior to meeting Cooper Wright in 1988, I had chafed on every
backpacking trip. He recommended nylon hiking shorts with liners.
Since then, in 12 trips to Philmont, I have not chafed. Here is why:
when the body sweats, it emits salt. If the salt is not washed from the
body and clothes (shorts and shirt) each day, the salt then dries and is
like little sandpaper rubbing a rash between the legs and arms.
Therefore, rinse the salt from your hiking clothes and body each and
every day to avoid developing a rash.

Hope this helps,

Wally Feurtado

Subject: [Philmont]: chafing issues?

Someone asked me the other day at our scout meeting if any of our crew
suffered the dreaded chafing.

Though I did not personally, some of our crew did have issues. Through
this site last year, it was suggested that Boudreaux's Butt Paste be
considered as part of the "medicine cabinet". I was glad I had it for
the boys. It can be found in the baby supply section at Walmart, by the
Desenex and A&D ointments. With the name being humorous, and not
refering to diaper rash on the front label, the boys used it as needed.
(maybe a couple of times throughout the week). Just thought I would
share that tid bit of info. The butt paste, hot spot kit, liquid
bandage, and vitamin A (Advil ), were the items most used on our trek.
That is until we had an adult crash and burn on the last day, busted his
head on a rock and knocked himself out. We needed all our bandages
then. Medics had to come up and get him. Required 9 stitches. Be
prepared!
