 RE Chafing

Many of us wore shorts with sewn-in briefs on our 5-day AT prep hike the
summer before Philmont. Generally, a bad experience. Mine were fine
(Columbia river shorts), but you need to get ones where the brief part
is a soft, cloth-like fabric, not fish net swim-trunk mesh. IMHO.

For Philmont we went away from sewn-ins. Wal-Mart has "Fit for Life"
polypro boxers and boxer briefs. Our prep hikes showed that these, at
5.99 a pair were the equal to the expensive ones from outfitters. The
Wal-Mart Starter brand wicking fabric shirts at $8.99 were the equal of
REI and Mountain Hardware or Capilene and for a lot less money. Got a
great nylon "fisherman's shirt" that made a good long sleeve shirt for
cool nights in camp for $16, but it cost $30 or so even at Cabelas or
BPS. Wal-Mart has a breathable-waterproof rain suit that is inexpensive
but a lot heavier then Red Ledge or Pre-cip, etc.

Not everything is at Wal-Mart, or not in sufficient quality, however. I
invested money in things unavailable at Wal-Mart (Good socks, Superfeet,
silk long johns, etc.)

Wal-Mart was a big outfitter for our crew.
