Re: [Philmont]: What makes a good crew?

IMHO...a "performing" crew is one that is prepared for the normal
occurrences. We train heavily on procedures and routines. (Once posted a list of said
items.) We spend very little time (comparatively) on hiking. When a crew
knows what to do, and has practiced it, they don't worry so much about having to
be told. Unfortunately, this takes knowledge on the part of the trainer. We
take many previous Philmont participants with us on our training hikes. This
reinforces what they are being taught, because they hear it from more than one
source. My answer to your question would be Preparation.
