RE: [Philmont]: Hot Showers

At busier camps (PJ and Baldy to name two), hot water goes quickly. If you
happen to hit the showers immediately after several crews, you may very well
be out of luck as hot water goes. The hot water heaters aren't that large
and can't handle the high volume that the facilities receive sometimes.
That's one of the reasons that using a minimal amount of water is strongly
encouraged. Still, timing is the key. Most of the camps have
propane-powered water heaters, but several (Sawmill and Cyphers to name two)
have wood stoves - if you want hot water at those camps, you have to work
for it!!!

Each camp that has showers is responsible for setting their hours of
operation. Since most of the showerhouses have a max of two sections (some
only have one) and they have to accommodate male youth, male adults, female
youth and female adults, camp staff will set designated hours for each
group. Generally, the bulk of the hours will be dedicated to male youth,
with fewer hours set aside for the other groups. Keep in mind that most
showerhouses close at 5 since that's the latest time that anyone can apply
smellable products (such as soap) to their bodies.
