Rhiannon McDermott asked:

We have some co-ed crews going to Philmont. I have spoken with a few
veterans but I would like to get as much advice from women who have been to
Philmont (and like with anything there were various opinions). How to
establish privacy boundaries, precautions for UTI and Yeast infections, how
many pairs of underwear, should we invest in funnels? Any information would
be helpful. Thanks!

Privacy didn't seem to be a problem with the two co-ed treks I was on in
2002 and 2004. Before we left, the crew discussed the importance of
respect for privacy in a co-ed unit. On the trail and at camps, there was
an announcement made (females to the right, males to the left) to remind
people to be aware of others.

As for underwear, I've seen it done many ways. Some girls wear synthetic
bike shorts, others synthetic bikinis (I wouldn't recommend cotton). I've
known a few girls who brought panty liners and just changed the liners
daily. I personally prefer the bike shorts or a combination of bike shorts
and bikinis.

I wouldn't invest in funnels. Two options are to just drip dry or to have a
"pee rag." The pee rag is just a specific bandana you use only to wipe
yourself with. It may sound a little disgusting, but urine is sterile and
it will keep you a lot cleaner.

I'd recommend each girl bring a personal little ditty bag with a Ziploc with
feminine products, pain relievers, and an empty Ziploc bag for used
products. The ditty bag can then be put discretely in the bear bags. Even
if girls think they'll miss their period while on the trail, I'd bring a
ditty bag anyway. Change in elevation, physical stress and environment can
contribute to an unwanted surprise. Better safe than sorry.
