I've used my lenses on three treks (84, 00, 02 and upcoming 05). I cannot
see without them. Glasses just don't cut it when your eyes are -9 each
(that is pretty bad for you lucky sighted people).
I carry 2 ounces of no rub Renu, a contact lens case, and my glasses, all in
a padded zip-up glasses case that hangs on my pack for ease of reach. I
bear bag the Renu in the evening after removing my lenses. I don't need a
mirror to put in/take out the lenses. If you need a mirror, use a sighting
compass on the trek and use that mirror for lens application/removal.
Depending on what solutions your Scout uses, it can be done easily. The
main thing is to make sure his hands are clean when handling the lenses.
I've seen some nasty eye infections in the back country from dirty hands
handling lenses and scratching the cornea.
My daughter is taking her contacts to the ranch this summer. She has the
same kit I use.
