RE: [Philmont]: Warning on Cool Max

I have cool max shirts from our 2001 trek that have been worn and washed
numerous times and the printing is almost as good as new. I wore them again
in 2003 as that year instead of the poly/cotton shirts that were purchased
for the contingent that were not nearly as comfortable (and a lousy design).
Even with lots of printing on the back, I have never noticed any feeling of
"hot spots" and unless you print a lot of area almost solid you are not
going to notice any difference in the wicking than you would with a shirt
with no printing. When I wear the shirt now, I still get complements on the
design - a take off of the Mastercard priceless theme. A Philmont credit
card (issue date the arrival date and expiration the date we ended our trek)
and below it "Cost of this shirt - $16, Cost of Philmont trip - $1100, Hot
shower and Mom's home cooking - Priceless". We plan to go with dri-release
shirts this year but still have not decided on the design.

Subject: [Philmont]: Warning on Cool Max

A word of warning about silk screening Cool Max. The inks do not adhere
very well and degrade with washing. The screened area is a hot spot that
prevents wicking and heat transfer. I obtained this information from a
large silk screening company last year. They were willing to do the job but
discouraged it. We use a 50/50 blend and don't take them on the trail.
