Roy,

Were you at Fish Camp in July '03? We had a crew member that wears contacts
that started having severe eye pain on the way to Fish Camp. Could not see
anything in his eye so we just put an eye patch over it. When we got to
Fish Camp we were waiting on the porch to talk to a staffer about the
situation when someone, seeing the eye patch, asked what was wrong. We told
him and he said wait a minute and he would go get the ophthalmologist in his
crew. The doc looked him, went to his pack and got a bottle of some drops,
told the boy when to use it and said he should be OK.

I have sometimes wondered how many ophthalmologists go to Philmont in a year
and what the odds were that one would be at Fish Camp when we needed him.

On the last day of that trek my son, who also wears contacts started having
problems also. That year, it was extremely dry and dusty (we only had rain
on the afternoon of our last full day) so it was almost impossible to not to
get some dust in the eye. Bringing glasses as a backup would be a very wise
decision.

In our crew we had several members who wore contacts with no problems.
We did include a small bottle of wetting solution in our first aid kit
as an extra precaution because of the low humidity. I also wore my
contacts without any problems. And they were much less hassle than
glasses since I didn't have to worry about prescription sunglasses or
clip-ons.

Our other advisor is an opthomologist, so we did have a bit of a safety
net, but it wasn't needed.

I would take the glasses in case of a damaged/lost lens or an eye
irritation though.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
