Subject: Fw: [Philmont]: Females at Philmont
Your e-mail was forwarded to me from a dear friend who knows that I have
been to Philmont once. I went back in 1991 as the only female leader with
an otherwise all male trek. There were 3 adults and 4 boys in our group.
As I had camped with them for 10 years, we were all comfortable and this was
a wonderful experience for us. There was one campsite that proved to be a
little challenging because the double bombadear seat latrine was needed by
one of the boys and myself at the same time. He was a gentleman and closed
his eyes as I walked around him to get to the second seat. The other
privacy encounter I had was trying to get a shower at Clarks Fork where the
boys did horseback riding. I had to wait outside of the community open
shower area as my husband watched the door. You must remember this was 14
years ago and things have probably changed.
As for precautions, I had a clean pair of cotton undies for each day on the
trail and changed my limited number of shorts around each day. I did not
have my cycle during that timeframe and I am not prone to UTI or yeast
infections so I can not comment on these items.
I hope you and your Dad will have the trip of a lifetime. I am very glad
that I was able to go and be with my husband and younger son on the trip.
Good luck with your co-ed crews. I found with my Venture Crew that if you
treat them like young adults, they will respond as young adults. Lay the
ground rules down early and be consistent.
Have a wonderful trip and take lots of pictures.
Alice

Good Morning! We have some co-ed crews going to Philmont. I have spoken
with a few veterans but I would like to get as much advice from women who
have been to Philmont (and like with anything there were various opinions).
How to establish privacy boundries, precautions for UTI and Yeast
infections, how many pairs of underwear, should we invest in funnels? Any
information would be helpful. Thanks!
