RE: [Philmont]: More info on hyponeutremia

The type of hiking done at Philmont will probably not affect the greatest
majority in this way. For one, the marathon runners used in the article as
an example are uber thin and prone to excessive fluid intakes. In all my
years of running on the roads, I've never seen anyone take in too much
water, but I've seen plenty that did not consume enough. I would suggest
that if you can carry it, you can probably drink it. I carried a camelback
(2 liter) and 2 1 liter bottles. I consumed every drop on a typical 10 mile
day. Parenthetically, I "constant feed" while hiking and the gorp, jerky,
beef sticks etc. that go in the breakfast have lots of salt. So going back
and forth from water to nibbling and back again seems to do it.

Coming from Georgetown, you guys will have plenty of experience with
dehydration issues before you get to Philmont. The humidity can make
dehydration even worse as most people do not realize they are drying out.

My course director at Wood Badge, Philmont 2000, suggested the mantra to be
"clear and copious." He wanted us to find a rock about every hour. If
those 3 things were not happening, you had a problem. I suppose, if you are
clear and copious every 15 minutes, you might be concerned about consuming
too much water.

Subject: [Philmont]: More info on hyponeutremia

This topic was pretty well covered last year, so at the risk of reopening an
old wound I'm linking to this article with the simple notation of "it's
something to be aware of."

It so happens that a personal experience of excessive cramping lead me
through doctor monitored testing to more closely watch my intake.

The more likely situation with youth is, of course, dehydration, but for
seasoned hikers the reverse may be true. YMMV
