I have celiac sprue which is a genetic wheat allergy. Philmont will bring your food to you but I brought mine with me. I bought all my own food and used only their's that was wheat free. I didn't trust them getting my food to me when we were getting ready to eat and was told the same at the commissary. I would get my food from Campmor after getting a list of ingredients from the manuf. One thing nice about carrying you r own food as the trip goes your pack is lighter. Also, the boys had extra food and we were older Scouts-athletes that could really eat I use mostly high calorie foods that I could use the hot water the boys boiled each day or just shook the heck out of it in my Nalgene ( separate bottle I carried and put up in the bear bag each nite) I lost 10lbs each trip but my Goodness it was worth it!! the time with your sons and friends and future friends can never be replaced in this life.

PS
Because of my diet the boys were very concientous about reading labels and this was another learning for them

I would agree that staying at home is not the best alternative, but not
knowing what the "special dietary needs" are, it might not be possible
to backpack for an extended length of time. I'm not sure what this
would entail, but if you were on the "Shamu diet" where you could only
eat fresh fish, then that could be a problem. ;>)

Then too, it might have been a "Mommy Message" - you know, "I so worried
about my little Billy; he needs a special diet. If he doesn't have
frozen yogurt at least twice a day he gets in a bad mood" - and it
caught someone on the wrong day (maybe they just finished doing their
tax return).

**** [IMPORTANT NOTICE: I am not implying anything about the person
referred to in the original post, I don't know the individual and I'm
sure she is a excellent parent and a fine person. But I think must of us
have been associated with Scouting long enough to know that this kind of
thing *can* happen on very rare occasions. And Daddies do it too.] ****

Now for the real message; does anyone have experiences where you tried
to substitute a Lunch 4 for a Lunch 8 (made up numbers) because Lunch 8
has peanut butter and Lunch 4 is squeeze cheese? I would like to try
this approach as a work around for part of my particular "opportunity"
if possible - and just for the youth in question. Its not a substitution
or special meal as much as its a swap. I can't imagine it really having
that much impact on Philmont's operations because both meals are already
packaged and it would only be one 2-person package. And it would
certainly make life easier.

Any help?

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
