RE: Hydration
The tour agency we used (Leading the Way Tours) gave each one of us a
soft-sided Nalgene with a flip-top lid and a drinking spout the moment
we got out of the Colorado Springs terminal.
Hydration is a key to preventing altitude sickness. Our Guide advised
heavily against drinking soda when we stopped for our meals before
getting to Philmont base camp.
A suggestion I heard somewhere was to stop drinking anything with
flavoring in it about 2 weeks before going to Philmont or going on any
water-only backcountry experience. We found it was very useful to
acclimatize your palate to drink flavor-less fluid and to drink a lot of
it.
Bottom Line: We were 100% Asymptomatic for any altitude related
illnesses throughout our trek.
