Pete-each member of our crew brought either 2 or 3 nalgenes (or a personal
hydration system and one or two nalgenes). Judicious attention to keeping
them full (ie, when you kill one, immediately fill and retreat rather than
waiting till all are empty) will handle 99% of the ranch. For dry camps,
we brought 2 extra "bladder" type containers to fill. We just made sure
everyone was practically sloshing with water when we left the last water as
we headed into a dry camp. That was belly-full and all nalgenes/personal
hydration systems were full to the brim. Also, pay attention to the map
and plan to take packs-off breaks at stream crossings and other water
sources. Sometimes kids don't want to stop and fill their nalgenes at a
packs-on break, but when they are taking a packs-off break, it is at least
more convenient
For me, personally, I am not into the personal hydration systems (even
though my backpack holds one). I bring 1 nagene and one 1.5 quart plastic
canteen that I have had since I was a scout. I normally drank out of the
1.5 quart, keeping the Nalgene in reserve. I made sure that when the
bottle became 1/2 full, I killed it, filled it and retreated it. By the
time I was ready for another drink, it was ready to go. If I needed a
drink before the first was done being treated, I broke out the nalgene and
used that. Then once it was 1/2 full, I killed it, filled it and retreated
it. But that is what worked for me, your mileage may vary. Of course,
this is something you can feel out in your pre-Philmont check hikes and
backpacks. Some folks are water dogs and some are not. There was a kid on
my trek that I swear was only drinking a couple of nalgenes per day with no
apparent ill effects (other than the advisor's hoarse voices from trying to
get him to drink more). He had a sip or two at each stop and that appeared
to be enough for his body..... YIS. Mike ('76, '02, '04).

Hello all...
Just want to confirm what everyone thinks about water carriers (and I know
there will be a mixture of advice offered).
If each person on the crew carries two Nalgene bottles and a larger
bladder-type water carrier (with or without the sipping tube), will that be
enough?
Please advise.
