"Is that pretty consistent with everyone else? That figures to two
Nalgenes and a bladder to carry three more liters. Sounds about right to
me, but then again, this is my first time to Philmont."
The amount of water you will need on the trail will depend on the day and
trail. On hot hard days a person can drink four to five liters of water a
day. If you are backpacking to a camp with a water supply, you should be
fine with 4 to 5 liters on a hard day. You can get your cooking and
cleaning water at your destination or a nearby camp. There is nothing
worse than running out of water on the trail with no water supply near by.
It is always good to have a little extra water to deal with the unknowns
like first aid situations. If you plan correctly, running out of water
should not happen under normal conditions.
