lots of great advise shared, especially the part about EAR PLUGS and a
blanket.

coming from California, there were 5 or 6 crews in one car. All of our
packs were on the lower level of our car in what I think was a lounge or
smoking section. NO smoke smell, just lots of packs. You will not have
access if they have you pack them this way.

It is good to spend a planning meeting talking about meals on the train.
The boys need to realize that eating in the snack bar car will NOT save them
money. Eating a meal in the dinning car is part of the fun. Glad we didn't
have a problem with running out of food. also you might be able to order
pizza and have it delivered to the train station during a layover. Atleast
we were going to try that in Albuquerque but didn't since it would be mid
afternoon when we were there for a layover.

My best advise is to set an IN the SEAT curfew and check several times in
the night. Others on the list have heard this story before, so please
forgive as I share it again.

In 2003 we sent boys home right after we got to Philmont. They had "stolen"
a night's sleep in a sleeper car on the train. They had to pay for the
night, leaving them with little money too. One of our advisors was police
officer. When He talked to the boys he tried to make them realize they had
broken the law ------------ defrauding the Innkeeper.

None of the parents or advisors thought we'd have a problem with our Council
Contingent. But I had insisted that we have a Code of Conduct. Each scout
and parent had to sign. WE used the one for the National Jamboree as a
guide. If you would like a copy to use as a sample email me off list.

I have taken the train 2 times and plan to use it again in 2007. Even with
our past problems it is a really restful FUN way to travel........cheaper
too. Make sure to tell Phimont you need the bus pick up and will be there an
extra night before or after your trek, depends which way you head home.
