When we found out we were going in 2000, I read everything I could about carrying that extra water. After doing our prep hikes and having some of the boys trying to carry that extra 2.5 gallons, we decided while it could be done, that big a container was just plain arkdward and a pain.
Then I was looking though the Campmor catalog and saw the Cantenes. I bought 2 of the large ones I believe 128 oz and the rest is history. Empty they don't take up any room, don't weigh hardly anything, depending on who isn't carrying much food or crew gear, you can easily switch them around. For puttin Polar Pure in them the night before so you easily have water the next morning to top off the water after Cameling up it was easy for the boys to figure out. We carried two filters and the Cantene tops fit those easiy.
I have see crews carrying 2-3 gallon containers, it can be done if you adjust the loads. It is cheaper also, but I have also had those Cantenes now for going on 6 years & I'm amazed how well they've held up.
