Jeff, I haven't seen a lot of responses to your question so here goes:

The first thing about water is that in Logistics while you are
checking in on day one you need to check the water board there. This will
let you know the up to date water situation along the trails and camps you
will be using. If you are heading to a dry or potentially dry camp, when you
are at the last water source before that, what we have done is everyone
drinks water till they are full, then wait a few more minutes (20) and drink
again. This way hopefully everyone is fully hydrated for the trail. This
could be your camp from the night before or it could be a camp or water
source along the way. You also check your next for sure water source to be
sure the crew understands what they might be up against.

Some suggestions have been to eat your dinner while you are
close to the water source and save the less water using lunch for dinner.
Anyway there are collapsible water bags that go to about 96 ounces. Two
regular liter bottles and one of these or something similar per crew member
should allow the crew to water up at the last water station before the dry
camp. If you have some really heavy duty hikers see if they can carry an
extra 96 oz'er just in case for the crew. This can be distributed as the
crew's water is used up so he doesn't have to carry it the whole way. Most
crews usually have at least one "mule" who can carry that with no problems.
As an advisor I would ask my crew leader to actually have the crew show
their water bottles after they are filled prior to leaving the last water
source. (I know a scout is trustworthy etc but). We have not filled up the
large water containers and hauled them to dry camps. If you were to have two
dry camps in a row look for a water source in between even if it would
require a few extra miles to get there.

Just some thoughts.

Just wondering how you carry twice the water for dry camps. do you use the
three 2.5 gallon containers you are supposed to bring, or do you use 3 liter
platypus or nalgene canteens for each crew members. Seems like carrying
that 2.5 gallon container would be a real pain!
