MessageThat's pretty much what we used, too. Each member on the crew had two nalgenes plus a collapsible water container. Most were the platypus-type bladders with hose, but others were just collapsible soft plastic. We filled up at our last source and were good to go for the dry camp and to the next water source in the morning.
Just before I hit "send", I remembered that we had a 2 1/2 gallon collapsible container as well. I believe we only used that in camp, but it was there if we needed it. Pretty lightweight option for in-camp water.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Water for dry camps
Our crews will be using 2 liter platypus/nalgene/whatever canteens (one per member) for dry camps, above what they normally carry. That's a little over 6 gallons for a 12 person crew and no one gets stuck with 20 pounds of water.
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
Just wondering how you carry twice the water for dry camps. do you use the three 2.5 gallon containers you are supposed to bring, or do you use 3 liter platypus or nalgene canteens for each crew members. Seems like carrying that 2.5 gallon container would be a real pain!
