RE: [Philmont]: Carefree AZ?

This comes from the Grand Canyon Council website:

http://www.grandcanyonbsa.org/Su402hikeaz.php?Cat_IDz=5
"Several of the trails are in the Phoenix area, and are well known to Scouts
and Scouters. These include the Superstition Wilderness Trails. Particular
trails include Second Water and Charlebois Spring. Reeves Ranch, Miner`s
needle and Rogers Canyon trails are also very popular.
Also in and around Phoenix are the Squaw Peak trails, South Mountain trails,
and Usery Mountain trails. All of these are excellent day hikes.

Just outside Phoenix is the Mazatzal Wilderness, in the neighborhood of Four
Peaks.

Some fine hikes can be had while learning something about Arizona history.
The Butterfield Stage Route trail lies just south of Phoenix near the town
of Maricopa. The stage ran between 1858 and 1861. In the same area is the
Mormon Battalion trail."

Don's Comments:

Phoenix is pretty flat, but there are several wilderness areas within an
hours drive. There is an amazing bit of seguaro wilderness to the north
west on the way to Wickenberg that is designated wilderness. I would
suggest you either visit the scout shop when you first get there or contact
them. It is a little tricky to find if you have not been there (east of the
freeway that runs n-s and north of the major road on the map, tricky turns
to get into), but they have a pretty good map on their web site. Having
visited dozens of council HQ's, it is on my very short list of "most
appealing appearance" HQs (up there with San Antonio and Las Vegas).

Anyone have any suggestions on where to hike in Phoenix, more specifically
the north side around Cave Creek, or Carefree Az? I am visiting relatives
there and would like to take a couple small warm up, stay in shape hikes
there. We're training for Philmont, and don't want to get too lazy this
week? Thought there may be some scouts or scouters from the area monitoring
this thread. Thanks for any info.
