I was told, that the dry camps were there to teach; conservation, water
management etc. There are plenty of camps that if you wanted to plan a trip
without a dry camp you could. Consequently Philmont sends you to a dry camp on
purpose. I think cooking dinner at lunch sort of ignores that idea or
opportunity.
If you want to/care to carry enough water to cook dinner at a dry camp, more
power to you. Philmont, in my opinion, is about doing what works for your
scouts.
Strenuous trek? Go for it. Our scouts have found that typical/rugged treks
provide a suitable challenge, while allowing time for relaxation/reflection
and program.
Cook in a pot? Our scouts did for a number of treks and then discovered
that Turkey Bags allowed more time for the wonders of Philmont.
Ultra-light pack? Maybe that works for your boys. Mine preferred a little
more weight so they can throw a Frisbee, play cards, sleep in a bigger tent,
have a thicker sleeping pad, and a chair to sit in when enjoying down time.
Listen to what is said on this list, then make YOUR choices. Take full
advantage of what Philmont offers, in the context of your scouts not another
troop's scouts (or adults). It's your trek, not anyone else's.
