RE: [Philmont]: Water for dry camps

Personally, its "here are some options, what do you think?" This past
weekend we had a hike into a "dry camp" - five miles in and no water
once we left the vehicles - and we fixed a regular "Supper". We
experimented with the "Parmly Method" modified with the bottom of a milk
jug instead of rock corrals, and consequently had very little clean-up
needed. When we got back to the vehicles, we still had a reasonable
amount of water left, so we possibly could have done a different cooking
method and clean-up if we had been conservative. We were a couple of
members short because of conflicting schedules; with a full crew, I
don't think we would have had any difficulty at all - provided we didn't
waste water - the rationale for the exercise.

The point is, now the guys know it can be done, with proper preparation
(we did tell them that aspect of the plan - to carry extra water). What
will they do this summer? Time will tell.

I tend to agree with Jim on this to a large extent. The Guidebook talks
about how water is a precious commodity (it still is)and how early
settlers had to conserve (they still do). Giving the crewmembers the
chance to "feel their pain" at least to the point of making decisions -
selecting from several options - based on the availability of water adds
to the "program". Kind of like letting a crew take the wrong trail, or
mess around getting out of camp and having to set up in the rain.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
