New to the list aren't you?

The current gear list from Philmont (2006) doesn't even
list GPS as an optional item much less suggest one per
crew. It is not required for a safe trip.

As I've suggested, I bring mine as a recreational item.
I'll use it to compute mileages covered. I'll collect the
tracks and put them into Google Earth after the trek as a
momento. But I will not use it to replace or even
supplement a topo/compass.

If you decide to go with a Garmin and it can load maps,
I've been working on a map for Philmont. The latest
version is on my website http://www.virtualcutts.com/ This
is for recreational purposes only. Make sure you use
official Philmont maps for navigation on the ranch.

I have a couple of tracks from a reader so I'm adding some
trail info to the maps. (He requested anonymity because
the list can be somewhat hostile towards sharing this
information.) I've looked at his data and found it
absolutely fascinating to 'watch' his crew slow on the
hills, 'race' down to a campsite, take breaks and wander
around the peaks he crossed.

If you have a track from your trip through Philmont, send
it to me. I'm trying to gather more of the trails for the
map.
