I took mine in '04 and pulled it out seldom. Mostly I used it for checking
elevation (something you can't get accurtately from a map or a compass).
I would agree that it is certainly not "needed" at Philmont, but the fun
factor, and the learning factor for the boys is a consideration. One of our
crew Chiefs had a great deal of fun with his fancy unit. He tracked the
whole trek and did a bunch of charts and tables after we returned home
which was kind of neat.
I have begun teaching a little GPS in the Troop, but only as an adjunct to
Map and Compass. When the batteries go dead, or the signal drops, you had
better have the real stuff along with the confidence to use it.
