I agree that the GPS is very important in the Val. Trails there are not
marked well. I also agree that it is not a required item as the maps are good
for Philmont proper.
However, I enjoyed having a GPS on the trail. It was nice knowing how much
further we had to go. (You can download the camp points prior to going to
Philmont.) It was also comforting to confirm we took the right trail. Not all
trails are marked well and I felt the GPS was a good back-up. Mine also has
an altimeter letting us know our elevations - which was fun.
