In regards to GPS units:
My father is a physics professor. He used a slide rule. When my brother
majored in physics, he used a Texas Instrument. My dad was upset that my
brother's classes never taught him the use of a slide rule, or even of an
abacus! I am an advocate of teaching the scouts the use of a map and
compass (my brother learned all sorts of info from the Navy that was
invaluable on our trek--as we were lost in the Valle). Still, I wonder if
the GPS will replace the compass, just as the calculator replaced the slide
rule... In that case, early exposure to both methods can only enhance a
scout's learning and ability. Food for thought... (Perhaps offered by the
devil's advocate!)

P.S. At my uncle's funeral, we rented a car with a GPS unit in it. We
entered the location of my aunt's house, and the only location loaded was in
Iowa--instead of New Mexico! Good thing we knew where we were going... :)
