I made our own out of rip-stop Silnet. 12x16. Used 4 hiking poles I modified where you could screw them together to make 2 taller poles which allowed us to actually walk through it bent over instead of crawling if you wanted. Was the envy of many at Philmont and other outings. Extreme light weight but you need someone that can sew the two pieces together and stake down tabs. Drove my sister nuts trying to keep the slippery fabric on her machine. Had to try several needles for the correct size. Thread was nylon purchased at local sewing shop. Throw it in a stuff sack, weight less than 1 pound with Aluminum/Titanium stakes and parachute cord tie downs.
Was a life saver for our sister crew who made it up on Mt. Phillips late in the evening and a storm rolled in. Had them camp right on top of us and use our setup with room for all to get to know each other better. Now that's Scouting.
It's still used from time to time. Used last year at Philmont by a friend of mine in another Troop near Chicago.
We used no Philmont equipment. All custom made or modified stuff, tried, tested, and practiced, to shave ounces yet make the experience more enjoyable. Even baked a cake for my son's birthday while there. Don't get me wrong, the Philmont equipment is good and there is a reason why they use what the use. I just like to use my own familar equipment.
You always have options. Just make them smart. But what ever you choose, make sure you make them now so you can use them on your preperation outings to get the boys familiar with it. "Be Prepared"
