[Philmont] Dining Flys

Some information on Tyvek will be found at

http://www.tyvek.com/whatistyvek.htm

It is said to block ultraviolet rays on this page. While it may be
used to go under building siding, there are many other applications
as well.

>From the above link:

Because TyvekŪ is water resistant, yet breathable, it is ideal for car, boat
and camper covers. The unique nonwoven structure of TyvekŪ protects against
acid rain and salt spray by holding out more water than cotton, polyester or
cotton/polyester covers; however, because it is breathable, it also allows
trapped moisture to escape, helping to prevent rot and mildew. What's more,
because TyvekŪ does not absorb water, it is significantly lighter than other
covers -- even when wet. TyvekŪ is a proven shield from the sun, blocking 98
percent of the sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, and it is specially
engineered to keep out abrasive dirt and dust, so finishes are less likely
to become dull or stained.

As to UV stability, a lot depends on the kind of stabilisers added to Tyvek,
which is a polyethylene polymer.

Further information from the above link:

Made from very fine, high-density polyethylene fibers, TyvekŪ brand
protective material offers all the best characteristics of paper, film and
fabric in one material. This unique balance of properties, which cannot be
found in any other material, makes TyvekŪ lightweight yet strong;
vapor-permeable, yet water-, chemical-, puncture-, tear- and
abrasion-resistant. TyvekŪ is also low-linting, smooth and opaque.

It looks to me like this would be an interesting material to make a dining
fly from.

I would suggest
that there are a variety of materials that will make a good dining fly.

Whatever you choose, try out your equipment before going to Philmont. If
you know your equipment thoroughly you can spend your time on the trail
getting to know Philmont, and not
the supplies which should be supporting you on your trek.

>One problem is that it is rather labor intensive. It comes on 150'
>rolls that are about 9 feet tall. So you either get a long, skinny fly,
>or you have to join the pieces together somehow (Tyvek makes a tape).
>Then, there is the fact that there are no grommets or tie outs so those
>have to be added. Then, as others have pointed out, unless its washed,
>it is sort of stiff and very noisy.
>
>Once all those factors are solved, it does okay. I use it for the
>ground cloth under my tent and a scrap from the trimming process as a
>"lay down sheet" at my pack so when I need something in the bottom, I
>don't have to lay everything else down on the ground. Both pieces weigh
>just over eight ounces total.
>
>I don't know how well Tyvek would hold up to the ultraviolet light that
>the tarps would get either. Its designed to go *under* the siding on
>buildings.
