My understanding, since first trek, is that Philmont does not allow off site
activities. Pizza and trips to close communities are not allowed. Have
even heard of the locals "turning in" trekers who violate. Never been worth it
to me. Have heard of someone who had a stashed cooler at the road cross and
everyone had a great time upon arrival eating ice cream. Must have had some
help from someone not on a trek.
