[Philmont] Pizza at Cimarron River

I think the concern they have is knowing where everyone is.

If there would be an emergency at home, for example, you
need to be able to get in touch with a crew member promptly.
If someone is off getting fast food and is unavailable in an
emergency, the Philmont administration may be unable to address
the emergency until all necessary parties are located.

I think it is highly unlikely that a pizza excursion
would coincide with an emergency recall, and even if it did
it should take little time to track down any necessary persons
who need to be contacted. But I have never worked
in administration at Philmont, and I might see things
differently if I had.

There has to be some structure when you administer a
program as big as Philmont and making it a rule that everyone
has to be on their assigned trek and at their assigned camp
at the times shown on the itinerary allows administration of
program at Philmont to proceed with some certainty.

That said, going "AWOL" at Philmont has certainly happened in
the past, as I recall reading an anecdote in Minor Huffman's
Philmont book (High Adventure among the Magic Mountains:
Philmont the first 50 years by Minor Huffman. 1988) in which a
staffer was not at a camp when he was supposed to be.

If I were you I would take something with me unknown to your
crew members to cook up. This circumvents the possibility that
the pizza purveyors might be closed at the time when you hope
to make a rendezvous.

As food for thought (pun intended), take a look at

http://www.recipezaar.com/r/46/173

where there are some really good recipes for cakes and cobblers
which might be good for a celebration.

Yes, it will involve a little weight but I'm sure the magic of
food dehydration technology could be brought in to play here to
help reduce the weight.

This is probably a good place to remind everyone that with some
pretrek planning you can "Be Prepared" to jazz up all the meals at
Philmont. With a little experimentation, your basic trail food can be
turned into something really special.

Plan to make one of the special meals into a treat for your Ranger,
who works hard on your behalf and deserves this recognition for his/her
efforts. The bonus is that there will be talk in the Ranger department
about this wonderful crew that really knows how to eat well on a trek.
If you do a really good job, they may write a campfire song about you
and you may become a Philmont legend. :-)

>First some background. One of our crews has itinerary #28 this summer.
>On Day 7 they are scheduled to hike from Clarks Fork to Cimarron River
>Camp with a food pickup at Ute Gulch Commissary, a distance of a little
>over 13 miles - looking at the graph on the side of the map, its more
>like 15. Cimarron River Camp is only about 3/4 to a mile from the

>think it is also one of the crew member's birthday.

>Now the issue. I was told that Philmont Administration severely
