Fellow Philmaniacs:
On Trek 28 last year, I was hoping the pizza thing wouldn't happen. The
boys were told about it by the ranger on the first night. One of our
guys got cell service to Simple Simons from the roadside. They
couldn't deliver because they were short of help. I thought we were in
the clear.
This industrious youth called and found out our Ranger had just returned
from taking out another crew. The ranger came out, got the money, went
to Simple Simons, and brought the pizza out. He then took the trash
and took it back. A leave no trace pizza run.
I felt the whole thing slightly broke the spell of the Philmont
experience....
On the other hand, The kids had an ABSOLUTE BLAST, and talk often of
this as the highlight of the trip. Having Pizza with the ranger and
recapping the storm on the tooth ridge side-hike, the chicken catching,
goat milking, etc. was a real hoot for them. The youth really like
their rangers, and ours was fantastic and memorable. Through this
action, he was escalated to legend.
The Pizza itself wasn't that great. BTW: The youth skipped the pizza
once they were bussed back to base camp, in favor of lots of the ice
cream.

Subject: [Philmont] Pizza at Cimarron River
We were on trek 4 in 04 & crossed the main highway were our cingular
phone picked up signal. We ordered 3 pizza pies from Cimmeron & they
delivered on the road with soda. Great booster for the boys. They even
took the garbage back! Best tip we ever left after a long time in the
woods!
