Had the opportunity to accompany a co-ed Venture Crew to Philmont on
itinerary 21 in '05. Some of the Crew wanted to order pizza when we crossed
64. We talked about this at length and I shared my opinion that ordering
take out in the back country is counter to the entire experience, similar to
taking Walkmans or PSP games on a trek. In the end, the Crew agreed and we
crossed the highway and continued on to the next camp site. Although it
would have been the most unique pizza party we could have experienced, you
can get pizza anytime, anywhere; you can only get Philmont in one place and
for some it will be a once in a lifetime experience. Just say no!

All I can add to this conversation is that upon returning to base camp, the
thing I most looked forward to was going into Cimarron with the crew and
enjoying Simple Simon's pizza and a large, ice cold Diet Pepsi (or two).
I'm talking FAN-TASTIC!
Waiting a few extra days for that wonderful repast is worth it, in my humble
opinion.

My understanding, since first trek, is that Philmont does not allow off site
activities. Pizza and trips to close communities are not allowed. Have
even heard of the locals "turning in" trekers who violate. Never been worth
it to me. Have heard of someone who had a stashed cooler at the road cross
and everyone had a great time upon arrival eating ice cream. Must have had
some help from someone not on a trek.
