I missed the beginning of the thread, so I hope this is on topic.
I bought 12 of the mini-philmont arrowhead patch pins. Every night at Thorns, Roses and Buds, I picked one crew member and gave them the "crew member of the day" award, and their own pin. I watched throughout the day for something I could use. On a couple tough days, I had to stretch, but I certainly found something to mention. ANd, amazingly, everyone ended up as crew member of the day one time.

I celebrated my 52d birthday at Philmont in 04. While my fellow
advisors and I were off taking showers at Baldy camp, the crew talked
the commissary into giving them a container of frosted ginger snaps.
At Santa Claus on the evening of my birthday, they broke out the
cookies and gave me the last two jalapeno cheese squeezers. It was one
of the best birthdays I've ever had!
So, talk to the commissary at the stop before the birthday and see what
they might have on hand to help celebrate!

Thanks for sharing your stories, Tom. On a side note--if you are at
a staffed camp on the day of a camper's b-day--let the camp staff know.
Perhaps they can do something special. I can't count the number of
times that we baked a cake for a b-day and had the crew come up on the
porch and celebrate. If the crew was passing through, we often sent
along a package of donuts or some such treat for the evening. Or if it
is a campfire camp, they can also sing and celebrate at the evening
program. So mention it to the staff--they love to do something special
for a crew. After all, helping scouters have an amazing experience is
why people work at philmont. (It sure isn't the spa-like amenities!) :)

It’s >amazing how something as simple as a letter (birthday cards) from
